You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden.  Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.  In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.  Matthew 5:14-16 (NIV)

I've noticed that some people have the ability to make friends easily just through conversation.  That has never been true for me.  I wonder if there is a cologne or perfume I can wear that helps.   More likely than not it is a personality thing.  You either have it or you don't.   One thing I have noticed is that those who have this gift seem, in the moment, to actually be interested in the people around them - even if they really aren't.    Personally, I think if you are going to ask someone how they are doing, you should actually care.

I know that what you say can have a big impact on people.   In the past I've said things that have made people smile and I've said things that have made people discouraged or upset.   Maybe it's not about me and what I should or shouldn't say.   Maybe it's about letting the love of Jesus flow through me so that I can be a blessing to others.   Instead of me trying to make a friend through conversation, maybe it's enough to be one through something I do.  I can be a friend to a stranger by meeting a need they have.   I can be a friend to someone who is lonely by visiting them.   I can be a friend to someone who is stranded by giving them a ride.   I can be a friend to someone who can't pay a bill by paying it for them.   Yes, I truly believe being a friend to someone is easier for me than trying to make a friend through a conversation.   I think I'm going to be a friend to someone today!
